The little biotech gathering in Germany

It started on a Sun morning, a few months back when I was running in the morning that I should invite the Biotech gang in EU to join my wedding celebration in Germany... and the same night, I managed to chat with Chyan Leong, and he agreed to join instantly. I was really very HAPPY! Then I sent an e-mail to the other 3 that I knew is in EU: Chee How, Yang Ping and Kenny. And I got replies from Chee How and Yang Ping that they can make it with their family too... I was even happier!

And so, the little biotech gathering in Germany took place from 14th Aug till 16th Aug... Chyan Leong was the first to arrive, followed by Chee How, Chuen Yi and Abigail on the 14th Aug, while Yang Ping and Ley Poh arrived on the 15th Aug... It was really cool to have all of them join in our wedding celebration.

Chee How and Chuen Yi were always very busy with Abigail, like Alex and I busy with Annabelle... and of course, we have similar parenting topics :-)

Yang Ping and Ley Poh, joining the PaMa club soon! Good luck and I hope that times will get better! And Chyan Leong, still the same old Chyan Leong... he still dance happily on the dance floor.... BUT he has upgraded and eat rice with a fork oh! The pics taken during the wedding and the day after... I think everyone still looks the same... maybe a little bit more matured?

以前被別人阻礙時，總會抱怨別人讓自己不方便呢！但是，換個角度來想想，原來是自己做得不夠好———讓別人來障礙啊。

Weng Chung Wedding Dinner

Finally he lost his freedom!

Wedding diner at Imperial Palace Restaurant at Puchong on 6th July 2008, 2 days after his 32nd birthday. His wife if i am not mistaken is 5 batch junior of us!

Too bad, only four (4) B2K attended, that is of course me and PL, TBK and Wai Kong. KJ last minute sick (i think he went to K.J. stadium kot?) and can't attended. Chee How's wife not feeling well, so not attended as well. B2.001K has 3 representatives, Ang, Kok Mun, Sook Foong. The rest were super junior of us la. Oh, Lisa Ong did attended as well, all the way from S. Petani!

As usual, TBK flirting around...... you know la, his style never changed for 10 years and he is still using it...... And as usual, we have the jean with t-shirt Wai Kong plus sport shoes that also never changed since we knew him more than 10 years ago.

Oh more thing, he (Weng Chung) can't drink at all! You know, AT ALL!!!!! He looked like "Kuan Kong" after drank a small glass of wine, bottom up!

Congratulation to Weng Chung and time to produce!

Yang Ping's Left Ankle

Introduction:
1. What happened? Fractured his left ankle and underwent the operation in SJMC last Friday.
2. When? 29th June 2008
3. Where? Singapore
4. How? Roller skating
5. Why Malaysia pula? Beh tahan with the Singapore's "restructured hospital" services.
6. Which hospital? Secret! I knew anyway!
7. How much? 5 digits, actual figure ask him personally!

Below is my conspiracy theory:
1. He miss Malaysia, does not want to go to Germany so soon!
2. He want to test the services of Singapore restructured hospital and compared to Malaysia GH.
3. He does not want to go Redang Island!
4. He want to try crutches after saw my blog on knee operation!

Results & Discussions:
1. As his wish, he will only fly to Germany in early August together with his wife.
2. There is no different between Singapore's Restructured Hospital and Malaysia's General Hospital. What we called LPPL or same-same.
3. As his wish, he got 50% refund, but end up paying more than 2k for admission to Singapore's restructured hospital (fully paid) as well as SJMC (co-insurance).
4. As his wish, he had his left ankle fractured, same as mine left knee.

Conclusion:
1. Don't ever try roller skating at the age of 32. Not a sport for old man like us that seldom/never try before. Take the sport you used to it, cycling!
2. Don't ever admit to Singapore hospital if you are not earning Singapore dollars, will cost you a bomb, futhermore if you are not PR!
3. Better mandi berdua-dua with wife rather than with nurse helping you wipe the whole body, naked!

Life Begins

Life begins at thirty. Or so they say.

I think my life has just begun. I had my calling. I don't care how well it'll do, or at least I think the potential is there, but I just want to do it because I know I will love every moment of it. And I know this is what I want to do in this lifetime of mine.

Cards and printing.

I took my first single step by listing my card creations on etsy.com and that changed my life. It's not that I became the bestseller instantly, but it was the fact that I actually took action after years of daydreaming and hiding my little cards in a box at home, not seeing the light of day. And now, they are.

It's a great feeling. I have so many plans unfolding before me, that the time can't keep up with them. But I can't quit my day job yet because it kinda fuels my hobby/business and gives me ample time for it.

Damn, why I can't get a calling for food business... especially at what the world is experiencing now.

I'm using my mouse with my left-hand, because I'm suffering from too-much-right-hand-use syndrome. I sprained my neck, staying too many late nights making *cough cough cough cough cough* cards :) So bad, that I had to, against my own will, see a chinese sinseh who wood-rubbed and bruised me with hot steam cups. I looked like I had a wild orgy.

In the meantime, I have a new blog, but it won't have pictures of my wild orgies (because they are imaginary nya hahahaha).

10th November 2007 - Wai Har & Keat Hong wedding dinner. A B2K from UPM, coursemate of us. Dinner started at 7pm but maybe due to jam and also bad habit of Chinese (always late for wedding dinner), the dinner started at 8.15pm. It is time for story, long story as well as phots sharing...... Too long and forgot where to start the story. To cut short the story, let's the photos do the talking. Let us enjoy the happy moment 1st.

Ally & Family

Two (2) cars from KL to Malacca. Me & PL, Ko Hsin, her BF & Sor Khim in another car. Ah Mok from Tangkak, Ally & Family from JB and Kian Ming from Muar. Nine (9) adults, one (1) kid. Ngam Ngam. We stayed at Garden City Condominium, three (3) of us (Me, PL, Mok). At very last minute, yeah i meant that, very last minute (almost 11.40pm), come rescuer. Emily and another friend of Vivian, to share the burden and also cost Ah Mok to miss the chance of knowing Emily as well. Because she stay with another guy that we thought is her bf, well it is NOT.

The dinner was held in Equatorial Hotel, behind the famous A' Famosa. We all sitting at Table 37 with Ko Hsin & gang reached there before 7pm, then came us, then Ally & Family and lastly Kian Ming. Poor Kiam Ming, a vegetarian, ate only vege + mushroom + non-meat food stuffs and he left at 10pm to catch 11pm bus to Bruas, his hometown. Then Ally & Family left as well at around 10.45 pm to Seremban.

Ally still the same skinny Ally, never grow old, only matured. Kian Ming & Ah Mok also the same. Never grow old but Kian Ming got gf now while Ah Mok still looking for prey a.k.a. victim in my point of view. Still promoting his latest product, UltraSlim condom!!! And he is still looking for victim to try it. Sor Khim, the Cikgu in Serdang dunno what school, Ko Hsin, the Direct Sales. Nope, not Direct Sales, more canggih word, MLM (Multi Level Marketing). Me & PL, getting older & older, sigh.

The next morning (Sunday), another ceremony to go through. Groom came to invite bridge. Due to lack of womanpower, tak sampai 15 minutes, the groom was able to enter the room. Of course PL as leader, assist by Emily and Vivian's sisters. Not too challenging for the Groom.

Vivian Wedding: The Venue

How do you become a non-judgemental confidante for a co-worker friend who is starting to get on your nerves?

Once a upon a time, everyone hangs out together for breakfast or lunch or tea in a doomed place where several institutes are housed in one high-tech scientific biomedical hub. N is my co-worker female friend and is probably one of the nicest person on the planet. B is a good-looking married expat who works in another institute, and who N befriended and often hangs out with.

N is single, and in her early thirties, and who wants to settle down someday. N had made a lot of caucasian friends since a couple of years back. If you didn't knew her, you'd think she's a desperate SPG, but in decent clothes and NOT with a Philipino/Thai accent, though you'd notice she does fake a bit of accent when she speaks to the ang mohs. It's very contradicting. You love as a friend but you wonder why she's like this. She seem to have placed the Asian males a class lower than the more preferred ang moh male potential partners.

One day, N confessed she had been having an affair with B for amost a year. I would never have guessed it, because I thought N was someone who knew her limits although she appears flirtatious.

For almost a year, they had met for regular 'dates' in town when the wife is working during weekends and steamier rendezvous was at his apartment or budget hotels. After work, they would have drinks at the cafe down our work building. Him, her and some other friends. Nobody suspected anything.

The relationship started to strain recently when N became obsessed that another woman was 'eyeing' on B. She caught them together having coffee. She caught them having a puff. She caught her sending him to work in her car. All those supposedly harmless sightings became a threat to her.

Then B wanted to break up. There was a growing amount of stress and guilt in him. He just wanted to end it. N was not happy of course, she loves him. She started to fall apart.

All these while, everyday, she tells me about her feelings and little little things like she bumped into him today and the stuff they talk about. I was there for her. I did not judge her. I did not support nor condemn her either. All I can do is listen.

Is that a good confidante?

My advice has been same. "Let him go". "Forget about him". And as a human, I know this is hard to do. Saying it was easy for me. Eventually I told her "Feel what you want to feel. Do what you want to do. Whatever I say right now will not matter, because you are not yourself and you are someone in love".

I am a horrible confidante to a person who knows they are making a mistake and still go on to do it.

I get angry when you dig your own grave, KNOW that it's a grave and jump right into it, then talk to me incessantly about it and all the minute little microscopic detail about your insignificant stupid mistake you made. And on top of that, you make it sound like you're the victim. "How can he do this to me", she keeps lamenting. "How can YOU do this to yourself", I thought.

There. I got it out.

I'm her therapist, and I need therapy now and then too.

I am no one to advise N because I am not in her shoes. But what I could offer was sane advice. Logic.

"Obviously, he is not that into you. What can you do? Ultimately, it's him who holds the card. If he leaves his wife to be with you, good then, everyone is happy, but is he doing it? No. He is messed up, and feeling terrible. He doesn't know what he wants. If he wants you, he'd want you from the start".

I've always been very black and white on such matters of the heart. You either want or don't want. I hate guessing games. They are tiring and pointless. Paul never let me guess. That is why I mothered his child.

I could see that N still wanted answers. She said she doesn't want to see him again, but when there were chances, they'd have a conversation. And after every conversation, there were no conclusion and it made her more frustrated every time.

Then I realized something. She wanted answers that she wanted to hear. B clearly wants to sort out his personal problems first and his marriage, but N still persisted for an answer. An answer that sounded like "I love you and want to be with you"

B and his wife are seeing a marriage counsellor. They are getting a divorce, I heard from her.

Once a upon a time, girl meets guy. Guy is married, girl is flirty and attracted to him and KNOWS he is married. Girl asks guy out for dinner, guy thinks girl is interested for a fling, and initiates sex. Girl wants it too.

So you tell me, is that digging your own grave?

Nostalgia

During the ample time I have while driving to work, my radio is always on, or my iPod. And sometimes, nostalgic songs play that reminds me of a particular emotion I felt before.

My emotions at certain moments in my life are remembered vividly with a song. That's how I associate my memorable emotions with songs that played during an event, or songs that just reminded me of something.

That late 90-s popular hit Mm-bop reminded me of my uni coursemate gang, particularly TJ because he said he loved that song. And it played when we were all in my Proton Wira on the way to class. I miss my gang. We'd walk to class together everyday, in the sun, in the rain without fail during our first semester. Seokshin, Sim, Kenny, TJ, Aiwah and me.

Then, there's Jars of Clay's Frail. A very soothing haunting lullaby that reminded me of the time I was infatuated with a Malay dude named Abang Asfia who later became my boyfriend of 2 months.

At that time, I was also reunited with a childhood friend, Daniel Jackson, who used to live next to me in Springs Garden Malacca, until I moved to Johor at the age of 7. I showed him my panties in his room one day. He loved cats, and would stuff as many kittens he can under his shirt. He once called the fire department to report a fire...for fun. That's my Daniel Jackson.

I found him on stage during a Music Fest in university, playing the drums, and boy was he good. He was also a very dark Indian, BIG, and had blood-shot eyes. I suspect he was on drugs. We chatted for 5 hours at night outside my KK5 block. He asked me if I would consider him if Abang and I are no longer together. I laughed. I can't remember what my answer was.

I never saw him after that. I heard he opened his own band.

Mariah Carey's songs were my favourite. She was hot at that time. I always listened to Close My Eyes when I'm lying on my upper deck bed in dorm, at bedtime.

I played the cassette tape on my Sony cassette tape player. If I turned to look out of my window, I'd always see Kenny and his roomate Jimmy's room. Our blocks face each other. I could also catch TJ sometimes, at his studydesk, wearing a hairband. He had thick black wavy hair. What an envy. He was my Hugh Grant.

Once he left me alone in the dark at a parking lot outside our faculty because he forgot something. It was after a gathering or some kind of meeting, and it was late. He was going to give me a lift back on his bike. It was a cool night. The tree rustled and the breeze swept through in the quiet distance. I stood there and waited. I wasn't scared, though I should've been. I felt safe and was on top of the world because I'd be one of the girl who once rode on TJ's bike.

Then, there's the magical Burn For You by John Farhnam. It played one rainy night, when Paul was lying on my bed asleep, in my room, in the rented double-storey house I shared with 4 guys and 3 other girls during our second year. That was the moment I thought ," This could be something".

Denniam was one of the guys in the house. Sweet gentleman he was. I remember his courage the most and I respect him for it. After I became single again, from the Abang, Denniam wrote me a note which I still keep now, along with many other memorable cards, notes, gifts, autographs etc.

"No matter where you are, what you do, remember that there's a silly guy who loves you"

One of the girls, Irene, is born a nurse. She actually woke me up every 4 hours at night to feed me my antibiotics when I was hit by high fever. I don't know where she is now.

And I will never forget George Michael's rendition of I Can't Make You Love Me. And many of his romantic jazzy songs. YJ and Season was the two most sensitive emotional guys I almost went out with. Throughout my first year, YJ was my emotional whore. Our confidante friendship started on the phone. We'd chat for 4 to 5 hours through the night and it wasn't tiring. It was comfortable. I met him in person for the first time during a get-together where all his friends made fun of the situation and made me guess who the secret caller is. He looked kind. He wasn't the tall dark handsome hunk, but he could communicate. He bought me sparkling diamond pendant, which I don't know if it's real.

I don't know where the pendant is today. He is a doctor now and I attended his wedding about a year ago, and sometimes I still bump into him and his wife in town.

Season was a determined and intense person. We'd listen to new age songs in his Kancil and imagine running through a forest. Very Enigma. He loved arts, drama fashion and music. I remember Chris Isaac's Wicked Games. He picked me some wild flowers and hung them at my doorknob as a surprise. One day, he came by the house and ran up to my room, to find Paul sitting on my floor with his foot stretched out smelling of medicated ointment. I never saw him again.

Some years back, I came across some news of a drama play that he was in. In that play, he man-handled a very pretty actress/model. Recently, I chanced upon his blog. He still look the same. Very arty-farty, more groomed.

Many were sceptical about Paul. He looked like he was going to break my heart in pieces. Everyone was waiting for him to make a mistake.

I saw something else. He is a good man. Kind, responsible, honest and hard-working. He loved me.

Vivian Lee will have her first wedding… opppss…. Sorry… her happy ever after wedding dinner in September 15. This year for sure… venue will be in Melacca.

Hello, i am coming to Singapore this Thursday and Friday staying at Pan Pacific. This is my 2nd trip to Singapore after more than 24 years. Another familiar face in Biopolis

I bumped into Weng Wah senior as he was hailing a cab to go back to KL to see his much-missed wife and baby. Yep, I could see it clearly in his face... the look of eagerness to see his family again. I can tell he is so excited to go home. That's why I kept our conversation very brief.

Anyway, this is not a new trend anymore in this 'globalized' lifestyle where couples work far away from each other and only visit once a week. I used to think that it is very cruel, but recently I opened my eyes more to see such situations, and it doesn't seem so bad after all. Maybe it's because I am part of the statistics now. Though Paul is based in KL only half the time, the week does feel a little long without him. Looking on the bright side, we have a good amount of time for ourselves, and we cherish each other's company more, and sex is awesome when you get hot and bothered for a week :) What can beat that hey...

It's all for the goodness of our future...

Yesterday, after a conference at Pan Pacific Singapore, I went to do a bit of shopping with some of my colleagues at Raffles City Shopping Centre. There I bumped into Dr. Tan SH. Of all people, of all places. Apparently, he was in Singapore just the night before, and was visiting GIS ( Genome Institute of Singapore where Seok Shin works) and Department of Biological Sciences at NUS. Dr Hari also came but too bad I didn't get to meet him because he was in his hotel room.

For that brief meeting, we talked abt our kids ( what else... when you become parents). He still has one daughter, and will remain that way. And she goes through what the kids go through in KL, those horror stories I've heard... tuition and exams in kindergarten!! But she's 8 years old already la. He said, it's normal. THIS is the way things are today. If you don't send them to enrichment classes when they're babies, they won't catch up in school. (!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm sure at some perspective, he did what was necessary. Anyway, it was quite a surprise to bump into him there.

My independent day after 6 yrs 2 mths and 20 days... shall I call for a celebration?? Hmm... maybe not. I just hope that I don't screw up and land myself into trouble. The 1st independent work I've done... attended a meeting. Ended up with more work on my list... how I wish my boss is still here.. sigh.. hmm.. he must be enjoying himself .... Yea of course, how I wish.. be gone those days where I can still relax and let boss take care of them. From today onwards, I will have to take charge of things ... for the better days. Wish myself luck....
